[Book Review] Whispers of the Runes by Christina Courtenay

Whispers of the Runes Christina Courtenay

She couldn’t be sure that she had travelled through time … but deep down she just knew.

And her only way back had just disappeared.

When jewellery designer Sara Mattsson is propelled back to the ninth century, after cutting herself on a Viking knife she uncovers at an archaeological dig, she is quick to accept what has happened to her. For this is not the first Sara has heard of time travel.

Although acutely aware of the danger she faces when she loses the knife – and with it her way to return to her own time – this is also the opportunity of a lifetime. What better way to add authenticity to the Viking and Anglo-Saxon motifs used in her designs?

As luck has it, the first person Sara encounters is Rurik Eskilsson, a fellow silversmith, who is also no stranger to the concept of time travel. Agreeing that Sara can accompany him to Jorvik, they embark on a journey even more perilous than one through time. But Fate has brought these two kindred spirits together across the ages for a reason…

My Review of Whispers of the Runes

I have been fortunate to have had the opportunity to read Christina’s previous books in this series so I am aware of Hrafn and Linnea’s story. You can read my review of The Runes of Destiny here.

Whispers of the Runes focuses on Hrafn’s brother, Rurik, and his experience striking out on his own. He is aware of time travel and when he meets Sara from the 21st century, he knows what to expect.

Even if you have not read The Runes of Destiny, you will have no trouble following this story. Rurik and Sara have a journey of their own, separate from the experiences that Hrafn and Linnea went through. They do make an appearance in Whispers of the Runes but what their role is exactly in this story is for you to find out.

As always, I am amazed by the level of research Christina has done for the book with respect to the Norse language, the history of the Vikings, mapping the geographical layout of the past to present-day Europe, and the Viking clothing, cuisine, and occupations.

Christina has described Viking silversmithing (Rurik’s occupation in the past and Sara’s occupation in the present) in great detail, making the shape and form of the silver objects come to life through her descriptions.

However, Rurik and Sara’s romance is less believable than that of Hrafn and Linnea’s bonding and seemed a bit forced. The end of Whispers of the Runes also seemed a bit rushed.

Nevertheless, it did not lessen my enjoyment of this book and I found myself getting lost in the Viking world, its hardships, dangers, and peculiarities.

A compelling tale by Christina once again!

(I received a copy of the book from Rachel’s Random Resources with a request for an honest review.)
