My Review of Building a Writing Practice

Sona’s highly useful book about creating a habit of writing every day has come at a good time for me. I have been feeling low and doubts about my writing ability have been creeping in.

I was expecting to read paragraphs about how one can write better. Instead, what I found were practical, start-right-now-style writing exercises–some of which I have already begun to put into practice.

It’s certainly a book I will re-read and recommend to anyone who feels that they need a push to begin writing or even to continue writing.

Sona’s clarity of thought is startling. In simple yet powerful words, she has put across some uncomfortable truths about developing a writing habit. In my own words, these truths are:

  • You cannot write well unless you read widely and read a lot.
  • You need to write consistently to grow as a writer.
  • You need to MAKE time to write every day.
  • Whether you feel happy or sad, you need to show up every day in order to get better.

Sona offers a gentle, step-by-step approach to help the reader develop a writing habit. If bigger goals seem overwhelming, she suggests starting small. With each step accomplished, a person feels more confident and is able to take the next step in his/her writing journey.

Sona has broken down each writing exercise into an introduction, an explanation of the exercise itself, and a conclusion that explains how the exercise helps. It’s a neat format that tells you everything you need to know about the writing exercise.

I’m floored by the choice of quotes for each of the writing exercises. Each one fits the exercise perfectly!

I’d like to mention some of my favorite ones:

“It’s not what we do once in a while that shapes our lives. It’s what we do consistently.” – Anthony Robbins

“Less explanation is more convincing than more explanation.” – Alan Cohen

“Be content to act, and leave the talking to others.” – Baltasar Gracian

“How we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives.”- Annie Dillard

I’ve learned a lot from Sona’s book and I intend to try out all the exercises she’s given. I also learned that she’s written another book with writing tips called Finding Your Writing Flow. Let me go find it!

Building a Writing Practice is clear, actionable, interesting, and wholly useful.
