Welcome to my stop on the blog tour for The Lie She Told by Catherine Yaffe! I would like to share my review of the book with you.
Genre: Psychological crime thriller
Publication date: October 1, 2020
When Kate sends her abusive ex-husband to jail, he threatens to take revenge. She flees to a remote place with her young son, hoping to start afresh. What happens next forms the crux of this book.
The writing is taut, economical with words but high on emotions, and capable of evoking vivid imagery. I was filled with a sense of dread and impending doom from the first chapter, and that feeling never really went away.
Even though the plot is somewhat predictable, the writing is so good that I wanted to keep reading. I finished the book in a single sitting–it was that gripping!
The danger that seems to dog Kate wherever she goes made reading the book an almost-physical experience. The tension is so sharp you can feel it slicing through every page.
I found the ending a bit underwhelming because I had guessed Kate’s secret roughly. When the reveal happened, it didn’t seem to justify the build up.
Nevertheless, I enjoyed this book a great deal and couldn’t turn the pages fast enough. It’s dark, gripping, suspenseful, and shows just how cruel and twisted people can be.
(Thank you to Rachel’s Random Resources for my copy of the book!)
