Book Blurb

Alfie snuggles down in bed,
dreams still in his little head.

He dreams he’s a king going out for a ride.
“A dragon sleeps in front of the gate,” they cried.

How will they succeed in waking him up?
By helping each other and lots of luck.

My Review

Rating: 5 out of 5.

What a delightful book with a relevant moral lesson!

I read the book on a Kindle, so I couldn’t see the colors. Even then, the illustrations were so attractive that it felt like I had been transported back to my childhood, devouring picture books. Each page has an illustration, with the accompanying verse beneath it.

Walters writes in pretty rhymed verse that makes it perfect to read out to young children, complete with sound effects. You know she understands children as she describes each step in Alfie’s dream as an important event.

She describes people and their occupations (castle band, cooks, blacksmiths, jesters, villagers) and the physical characteristics of the dragon in a non-threatening manner.

On a macro level, the book teaches the value of being kind and empathetic, and taking a considerate approach to solving problems. The moral of the story (according to me) is that you needn’t use force to resolve issues–a patient and thoughtful approach will do the trick just as well!

My preschooler loved the book, and he often asks me to read the “dragon story” to him.
